Mr. Green’s Letter – October 13, 2017

Dear Henderson Mill Community,

Growing up in New England, the vibrant colors of autumn leaves are forever engrained in my memories.  I remember as a child riding in the station wagon, looking out the window at the colorful landscape before me.  But fall colors are fleeting.  They won’t be here forever.  Sure, they come around year after year, but wait too long and you’ll have to wait another year to experience them.

I was having a related discussion with my wife the other day about just how quickly life seems to move.  We often look at our children, Lily and Nathan, and ask, “Who are these people living in our house?”  When did they become actual people with opinions and thoughts, activities and interests?  If only we could slow it all down.

Or can we?  I treasure each moment with my children.  Our interactions are so important in helping to form them into the kind of leaders we want in our society.  But how do we get more of these interactions?  Henderson Mill has created these opportunities for you to engage with your children and for all of us to build memories to last a lifetime.  In fact, this month is full of excellent community events that will provide the backdrop for amazing family experiences:

  • Playing in the Dirt Day – Sunday, October 15th, 12-4 PM. Spend a few hours with us building a better kindergarten garden and taking on other beautification efforts.  Show your children just how important it is to make a difference in both your words and your actions.
  • Multicultural Café – Tuesday, October 17th, 6-7:30 PM. Prior to the event, prepare a culturally significant dish with your children and talk to them about why this food is so important to who you are and who they are.  Decorate the paper doll and flag that we sent home.  Teach your children about their ancestors.
  • Atlanta Gladiators – Saturday, October 21st, 7 PM. Our HMES chorus will be performing for the crowd.  Bring your family, support the chorus, and build great memories with your children.
  • Screenagers – Tuesday, October 24th (Friends School) and Wednesday, October 25th (Emory’s Center for Ethics), 7 PM. Watch the short movie about growing up in the digital age with your children and let it foster deep discussions about how to disconnect in order to reconnect.
  • Spirit Night at Moe’s – Thursday, October 26th, 5-7:30 PM.  Come watch me roll some burritos and enjoy a meal with your family while simultaneously supporting our PTA.
  • Henderson Happening – Friday, October 27th, 5 PM. It’s a fall carnival not to be missed.  Get into costume.  Show your children your playful side.  All proceeds support our teachers’ out-of-pocket expenses.  There will be food, fun, a haunted house, and even some candy.

The way to slow it down is to be present, to seize the opportunities to engage with your children and to be a part of something greater than just you, your Henderson Mill Elementary School Community.  It’s not too late. Join us!

To Quality Relationships!
