Summer Update

Good morning, everyone!  I hope you are all having a wonderful summer so far.

The school has been a busy place this month.  The first week of break, many of the teachers and staff were at the school planning next year’s PBLs and other STEAM education and activities for the upcoming year.  The next week, Georgia Power hosted its Learning Power Camp and teachers and staff worked on plans for PBIS.  In addition, teachers and students have been at the school for summer tutorials. We have been meeting with incoming PTA Co-Presidents, CJ Barranco and Nikki Peterson, as well as other fabulous volunteers and Mr. Green to start planning for August, including the Open House on Wednesday, August 1st; New Parent Orientation sessions on Thursday, August 9th; and Curriculum Night on Tuesday, August 21.

Meanwhile, Mr. Ali and the custodial staff have been hard at work and the School District has been working on the facility a bit, too.  You may have noticed construction on the hill:  they are replacing our grease trap, as well as installing an all-new playground, which is not quite finished yet, but will be ready in time for school to start!    Unfortunately, the SPLOST-IV HVAC units that we expected to be installed this month have had an ordering delay, so the district plans to replace all of the classroom HVAC units throughout next semester, instead, on nights and weekends.  However, some progress has been made with replacement of two large HVAC roof units that cool the cafeteria, which should be completed in about 3 weeks.  Our events will be so much more fun with new cafeteria air conditioning!

Our most exciting facility update this summer, though, is our new teacher’s lounge! The HMES Foundation is updating the teacher’s lounge with a redesign to make it a more comfortable and functional space for our wonderful teachers.  This Saturday morning the tangible work will kick off with some painting as an electrician assists with wiring.  We are looking for a few volunteers from 9 to 11 am to help paint the drop ceiling tiles and grid.  If you can help out, please sign up here:  bit.ly/helpHMES

Thank you all so much, both for reading this and for all of your support for the school through the last 2 years.  This is my last week as an HMES PTA Co-President and it has been a wonderfully fulfilling role.  It has been such a pleasure to work with you all and I look forward to continuing to do so.  Handing the reins over to CJ and Nikki is bittersweet, but I know they will do an amazing job!  See you soon!

Yours, sincerely,
Kate Schuessler
