Math

iXL

We encourage all HMES children to work on iXL regularly. While some iXL work is done at school, it’s primarily a program for you to use at home. You can get your child’s login information from their teacher. On iXL, children work through math practice at their individual math level and earn awards on their profiles. Awards are given on Awards Day to children who gain the most skills for their class and their grade. You can access iXL at https://www.ixl.com/.

XtraMath

We encourage all HMES children to work on Xtramath.org regularly. While some of this computation work is done at school, it’s primarily a program for you to use at home. You can get your child’s login information from their teacher. On Xtramath.org, children work through basic math calculation practice at their individual level. Progress is reported back to the teacher and to you, the parent. When a student demonstrates mastery of an operation (+, -, x, /) Xtramath will alert you and the teacher. Students are recognized on a board in the cafeteria and on HME-TV for their progress. Awards are given on Awards Day to children who master the most operations for their grade.

Math Magician

Math Magician is used in the classroom for children to practice math facts. Teachers choose children each week to race Mr. Green on Math Facts in the STEM Lab on Friday mornings at 7:20. Children are awarded certificates for completing levels. You can access Math Magician at home using http://www.oswego.org/ocsd-web/games/Mathmagician/cathymath.html

Reading & Language Arts

Raz Kids: https://www.raz-kids.com/ is another web-based reading program that can be accessed from school or from home. When students login, they will be able to listen, to read and to take a brief quiz on approximately 40 different books at their reading level. These books are a mixture of fiction and non-fiction and are designed to help your child improve his or her reading level. Get your child’s login information from their teacher.

Reading Lists

Each grade has a reading list that all children are encouraged to complete during the school year. The lists are Stars (1st), Stripes (2nd), Bronze (3rd), Silver (4th), and Gold (5th). Reading Lists are available in the Media Center, and on the school website: http://www.hendersonmilles.dekalb.k12.ga.us/ReadingLists.aspx. Once they have completed a book, children should take the AR test for the book and record the information. Once the list is complete, they can be turned in to the Media Specialist. Children are awarded medals at Awards Days for completion of the lists. Children can complete any list in any grade and can work ahead on later lists.
